Mayra's journey is one of resilience, determination, and hope. After aging out of the foster care system, she faced challenges that many young adults aren’t prepared for—navigating life without a stable support system. Through her strength and perseverance, she not only survived but found a way to thrive, overcoming obstacles that could have easily derailed her future.

By telling her story, we aim to shine a light on the struggles many face when they age out of foster care, and why it’s so important to share stories like Mayra’s to inspire action and compassion in others.

A story worth telling.

Mayra’s journey is one of incredible resilience, a story that needed to be told to bring light to the struggles of those aging out of foster care. Her raw honesty about loss, survival, and finding hope was a reminder of how important it is to have a support system when navigating adulthood. By sharing her story, we hoped to inspire others to step up and offer the mentorship and guidance that can change a life, just like it did for Mayra.

How We Captured It.

We chose a deeply personal approach, capturing Mayra’s story through intimate close-ups that let her emotions shine. In editing, we focused on letting her voice lead, using subtle music and pacing to amplify key moments of her journey. The result was a heartfelt, raw narrative that allowed viewers to truly connect with her experience and understand the impact of giving hope to those who need it most.

Without access to personal b-roll or childhood footage, we had to find a creative way to visually represent key moments in Mayra’s life. To fill that gap, we used hand-drawn, one-line illustrations that symbolized her journey—simple yet powerful visuals that reflected the emotional weight of her experiences. These drawings added a unique, artistic layer to her story, giving viewers a sense of the milestones and challenges she faced, even in the absence of personal footage.
